1997 North Carolina Mountains Bike Trip
Tom Stitt just submitted these photos he uncovered from a trip he took with Mark and a group of kids in 1997. This was our first totally self-contained, non-supported "cross-country" bike trip. We've had plenty of other cross-country bike trips in other years including a couple "Mountains to the Sea" trips, but they were supported by a sag wagon carrying our gear. We were dropped off for this trip and picked up five days later. We carried everything we needed with us and bought additional food along the way.
We were on one of the mapped and signed NC bike routes. It started off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were able to visit one of the camper's homes for one lunch, a different camp for one of our dinner's, another friend of camp for lunch, and even stayed at Mark & Bobbie's place for one of the nights. That's the route the trip took. You can read the description of this "Southern Highlands" trip in one of the photos in this gallery.
