The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy works hard to protect the Roan Mountain area. Over the years they have protected tens of thousands of acres of pristine land from development. And just in the past few years they are now protecting nearly all of the TrailRidge property and some adjoining land as well. Yeah.
The Nature Conservancy is another favorite organization that helps protect land around Roan Mountain in addition to special places in all fifty states and land and water around the world.
The Appalachian Trail ran behind the old TrailRidge property. Still does. We were between Iron Mountain and Hughes Gaps. There was a trail shelter not too far behind camp. Click for the official National Park Service website for the AT that includes links for other associated organizations.
Remember driving over to Burnsville to see one of the productions at the Parkway Playhouse? They’re still going strong and producing more shows than ever. Do you remember that long-time campers Taylor and Logan Marshall-Green’s mom was the director?
Penland School of Crafts in Mitchell County is known around the world for its incredible artists and instruction.
Camp Spring Creek in Bakersville. Friends started this camp several years ago and specialize in helping bright boys and girls with learning differences.
